daffodils and tulips

Hi there,

Can daffodils be dead headed after flowering or is it best to leave them the standard to months until they die back naturally?  Is it the same for tulips?

Deadheading is meant to stop the plants producing seed, so energy is diverted into building up the bulb for the next season. However, to do this the foliage (as opposed to flowerhead) needs to be left intact and die back naturally.
  • Thanks for that figrat

  • Hi. I cut the flowers from my daffodils to put in a vase (they were falling over in the wind anyway) - so the were not 'dead' heads. So long as I let the foliage die back, I assume they will be fine too?

    Thanks, Kaitlin

Yes they will-leave the foliage alone for at least six weeks and feed with a general fertilizer.

  • Thanks
