bulbs!

Being a total 2014 newbie, ive stuck to annual seeds so far... i have a bazillion to sow later in spring... now im learning bulbs... is it too late to plant any in spring this year, for summer colour, or do i really need to start with the bulbs in autumn this year?

    Lilies can be planted now Loganberry. There's lots of things in GCs just now too. Also , you can buy bulbs 'in the green' just now such as Snowdrops and Aconites etc. If you have a quick search online you'll find specialist  bulb companies which will give you some info. I got a load from Gee Tee bulbs last autumn and they were excellent to deal with.

     I'm thinking of trying some Acidanthera this year - the more delicate and attractive Gladiolus. More subtle than the Dame Ednas...image

    Summer bulbs, which are really tubers, not bulbs, but get lumped together with them, are dahlias and begonias, which can be started now in a greenhouse or conservatory and planted out after risk of frost. They provide lots of summer colour.

    Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

    Surprising amount of bulbs and bulb like things can go in now, look in a good garden centre or good web site - the Spring bulbs like daffodils and tulips will indeed have to wait until autumn, but lots of other fun things now - dahlias?  Not bulbs, but tubers, good time to put those in if you like them, and they can last for many years.

    Not sure about knowing all the answers LH - Even if I live to 100, I still wouldn't know half of what some people here know! image

    Been gardening about 30 years I suppose - from when I had a tiny little patch in front of my first flat image
