Help . . . how do I make my brown lawn green again?!!

Put new turf down on a smallish patch of lawn in Autumn last year.  It seemed to take, was growing, etc, etc . . . but now it's brown and crispy looking.  If you look carefuly, you can see some green blades of grass poking through, so am hoping I can breath life back into it again.  Do I liberally water it with a sprinkler and see what happens?  Put grass seeds down?  Miracle gro?  Fertilizer?

Any help is gratefully received!!!

Hi Josephinus - if you can post a pic that would help enormously. If you click on the tree icon on the toolbar above the window for your post it will give you instructions.

A few questions though - what was the condition of the soil you laid the turf on and what aspect is the lawn - ie north facing south facing etc. Also, is it in shade - from other buildings or trees/hedges? Is the ground soggy, compacted or stoney?

All these things can have a bearing on how well grass grows. Any extra info wil be a help in determining the problem. image

Josephinus - a couple of odd sounding questions for you. It might help us work out the best plan of action for you.

Over the winter has your garden been terribly water logged? Has the grass been regularly submerged or left with huge puddles for a few days at a time?

What is it like now? Can you walk on it without the mud squelching up your shoes? Has it gone hard and dry?

Does your lawn normally get a lot of traffic through it (children / animals) that would damage any new growth / be something we'd need to consider before suggesting chemicals like fertilisers to assist you.

The fact that you already have new growth is a fantastic sign!
