Help with identifying plant by smell.
This is an odd question, but I've had no success searching the net. Something in my garden, or possibly next door, gives off a very pungent almost musky smell. I've had no luck finding the source of the smell. The only way I can describe it is that it smells like marijuana! I've often wondered if the neighbours are growing it! But I'm assuming probably not.On days like today the smell is very strong in the garden and in the house too if yhe windows are open. It's not especially unpleasant but I am very curious to identify it. And I'd be reassured to know we're not living next door to the local dealers!

Crown imperials, Frillaria imperialis are pretty pungent at the moment. Smells are hard to describe, I don't think the frits smell of cannabis. But maybe they do, perhaps that's why I spend so much time sniffing them

Yes, Crown Imperials would be my guess too - we have some on the terrace and the smell is quite strong - apparently some people smell it more than others - fox-like, very musky.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

It's the bulbs and leaves Lottie, and maybe the flowers as well but mine aren't flowering yet

Just about to close the blind by my computer, and what a sunset
On the theme of plants smells, when I was about 10 or 12, I smelt the most wonderful scent from a flower; it was a cosmos/Japanese anenome shaped flower, quite tall. But I have never been able to find that scent again; I seem to spend half my life leaning into people's front gardens to sniff this shape of flower, but with no luck.
It is not a sweet scent, more a wild flower fresh air sort of scent.

my parents garden had a very limited plant list; siberian wallflowers, gypsophila, what was probably Viola cornuta and Primula 'Wanda'. There must have been others. Yes, tradescantia and forsythia

Auntiem, it certainly looks to be the right thing; but would something as exotic as this have been around in London and the Home counties in 1958? Also the plant can achieve 8' in height with flowers 5" across, which is far larger than the plant I saw. What is the scent like?
am I thinking about white or pink artjak? Might be important once the effects of the wine wear off

Artjak, the scent is clean and fresh, but really lovely. I have no idea about 1958 but in terms of size, mine are in pots and grow no more than 4' high.
Try one anyway. they are delightful plants.
