Hope these are useful. I woud not just 'cut'them down but try to make the most of them.
There was a pruning article in GW magazine in late winter/spring (not sure which month) which showed how to do this. I lent it to NDN who has did his trees and they had blossom and now have fruit. They are definitly negelected as a rule.
I have a birch bark cherry in my small garden, it grows to 5m in 20 years, it is very attractive all year with small white flowers in spring and a lovely bronze/red bark must be one to try.
