i bought these to put ether side of the front door in the front garden (north facing) will these trees be ok in this position.

its north facing and seems to be full shade until about 3pm in the afternoon.

thanks

Andy, if it weren't 7.30pm, I would take a picture of our two bay trees which have sat on a north facing doorstep all year.  When I put them there I expected them to sulk, and I expected to move them.  Like yours, they will get no sun till mid afternoon.  One of them in particular is covered in healthy new growth.

Bay is very hardy. I had quite a large bush in my old garden which never got any sun in winter and full sunshine in summer. It thrived, so they will be fine where they are.

Mine is the same, no sun ever.  Its been there for years, i just chop it back when it gets too big.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Mine lived for yrs, but beware very long frosts that cause the roots to freeze for an extended time, and insulate the pots if that looks likely. Also, mine were south facing, and I think that thawing too quickly on sunny mornings didn't help. They are probably safest where they are, if used to it.
