  Try planting other plants that act as natural insecticides instead of putting vaseline . I recently read about plants that are natural insecticides here  http://www.topbest.ph/blog/5-plants-repel-pests/

  I have some black treacle would that work,  i also have honey and vaseline could i mix all three together and paint it on the base of the tree.

  This is a very old thread. I don't think ants pose any threat to trees.
