David K, thankyou so much for the lovely photos, I must say your Acers look very impressive. May I ask what varieties/how old they are and if you have them in any particular aspect? I only ask because one seems quite happy in an open site whereas the other is more protected in a cornered site. If I have half the success of yours I will be very happy.
Meomye - The one in the garden (although it's still in a pot) is Acer 'Garnet', I'm not sure about the name of the other at the mo.....in fact I gave it away a couple of years ago.
Both are over 10 years old and were bargain buys as tiny plants.....I think it was Woolworths.

Meomye (love that name) thought you may like to see my acer 'garnet' in her autumn dress.
Edd I do wonder if the location of your Acer is one of the problems.
When mine was smaller and by the front of the house the brick walls held too much heat in summer and gave no protection in winter - more exposed to the vagaries of our climate than you might think.
Now, although I have moved it again, it is still with other plants (fence and shrubs behind it, small pots of various plants in front). It seems to like that placing in spite of facing an easterly aspect.
Meomye – In my opinion, potted Acers don’t need too much feed…..add slow release granule fertilizer such as Osmocote at planting time, then again each spring. Your Acer should not require any additional feeding throughout the summer months.
Now that mine is in full leaf can see that it is A.palmatum, (from the 'expert book') and have just been to have a look at it. See growth coming from lower down the trunk. That part is
shaded from small laurel and berberis. So it is surviving the easterly aspect.
When the sun has risen over the fence and tree line I'll attempt a photograph on this tablet.
Acer with growth from base of plant, has some long branches (you can just see one to the right) seeking light with leaves at the ends. Pot size 2'x2', the largest I had. It's tucked away in the shrubbery facing east but sheltered from easterly winds, gets dappled sunlight.
Saw your acer on the other thread; a sorry sight! Have to say I think it has been kept in the wrong size pot ond position Such a shame it has succumbed to disease.
Hope it hasn't put you off growing another acer, they are beautiful

Edit. In a shaded/sheltered corner facing north.

Thanks David, your 'Garnet' is beautiful and certainly seems very happy in its location. Do you give it any special feed?

Hi Edd,
Just wondering how your Acer is growing?
