Chris B is exactly the sort of person gardening on telly needs. He oozes credibility, knowledge and experience. But, as has been said , is also a great communicator.
Hostafan, I was intrigued by what you said about rose planting depth. We had a thread about this recently and it is clear there are many different opinions on this subject. I recently bought a bare root rose from David Austin and they stated that the graft should be 1 inch above the soil.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
I feel really sorry for Monty. He gets stick all the time, and, yet again, he's had the misfortune to be asked to fill MrT's footsteps. I don't really think he's the right person to front Chelsea, but then again, comparing G's World and Chelsea coverage is a bit like comparing what models wear on the catwalk to what we actually wear. Two entirely different beasts. I'm not a huge fan of Chelsea, I find it repetitive, but that's just me.
Perhaps the Beeb need to decide what kind of programme they want G'sW to be if it's losing popularity.
And maybe they don't really know.....
James Alexander Sinclair would get my vote for any type of programme. Hilarious, knowledgeable, articulate and enthusiastic.
Must remind him to send me that fiver now...
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Punkdoc - I have bought several DA roses over recent years and the advice given is always to bury them so that the base of the stems (ie graft union) is below the soil. On their website they say to plant so the base of the stems is 3 inches below soil level.
Fairygirl - I'd love to see more of JAS presenting gardening and plants on TV.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

I enjoyed that helicopter garden programme CB did some years back Liz - did you get it in France? The heli was a bit of a gimmick, but it was a pleasant way of spending half an hour

AT v MD a bit academic as the former has gone....MD, doesn't impress & I really don't care what he turns his hands to. Don't care much for Chelsea either, for that mater & rarely watch the TV coverage.
Yes, Fairygirl, satellite TV - until the Beeb decide to change satellites. Which they've recently done and lots of Brits in Southern Spain have lost their English TV. There should be a European agreement. I pay the French licence, but don't watch much French TV as OH doesn't speak French well enough. He moved here at retirement, but I was younger so I do speak French.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
punkdoc, If you plant the union below soil level, A : the top growth will, in time produce roots of their own,and B: as the rootstock doesn't get the sun, it's much less likely to produce suckers.
I love going to Chelsea to see the gardens up close but also because I can chat to world class nurserymen and women about their plants asw ell as strike up conversations with complete strangers in the crowd. I enjoy the evening coverage but wish they'd cover every garden and more of the nurseries in the marquee instead of all the repetitive stuff from the same few gardens and the time wasted covering celebrities' gardens. I haven't been able to watch the midday programme with Nikki. Too "lite" and stupid, especially the flower arranging gimmicry.
I don't see why the RHS wouldn't be in a position to demand a certain presenter or quality of presentation and production when drawing up contracts for future TV coverage of Chelsea so we'll just have to wait and see how MD does and what the viewing figures are like compared to other years.

Punkdoc must have meant me, about being told that CB is easy on the eye! I find him very attractive, and I've said so several times

We rarely see JAS on the TV any more. Liked him, fun.
