    It's a bit early for that Azalea to flower now, even though plants seem to be ahead of their normal flowering period. IMHO this is Rhododendron 'Praecox'. It's always the one of the first of the Rhododendrons to flower in our part of the world. 'Praecox' means "early".

    Strictly speaking it is not possible to tell whether this is an azelea or a Rhode as you cannot count the number of anthers.

    It is a particularly important differential anyway. Basically the azeleas make up 2 genuses of the Rhode family and they have 5 anthers per flower.

    To a botanist, they are all Rhododenron. I agree with Flowerchild, could well be 'Praecox'.
