new lawn on clay soil
in Talkback
My lawn has gone thanks to my hens digging it up and eating it, and also the wet winter. It is a clay soil. The hens are now permanently shut out and we wish to replace the lawn. It would need to be hardwearing and rapidly established as we want to use it this summer and also have 2 dogs. We have a limited budget. What would be the most cost effective method while still be able to use it this summer and how should we prepare the clay soil?

No cheap & easy answers, I'm afraid. The only way you will get to use it this summer is by turfing it. If the clay is compacted, you'll need to use a rotavator to break it up, add grit and organic matter (mushroom compost will likely be the cheapest) to improve drainage, then level it with a rake, tread it down, rake again then turf it and water it every week for the rest of the year. You'll need to keep off of it for at least two months.
