Identification

Now that the weather is brightening up I have finally ventured into my poor neglected garden. Before I start digging up the good bits is there anybody who could identify whether this is a weed or a plant, thank you.

Not sure but it looks just like those grasses that grow in boggy areas in the woods.

It's soft rush - juncus effusus - grows in damp meadows etc.  If you want a bog garden it's a plant, but if you want a lawn then it's a weed. image

In years gone by it was used to make 'rush lights' a cheap substitute for candles, made by soaking the pith in tallow (animal fat obtained after cooking).

  • Wonderful, thank you all image

Can't say I live in a particularly boggy area, if anything the soil round here is very sandy. Must be down to weather we have had of late lol

    Dove - I don't believe that about candles - I think you're taking the pith...image

They grow everywhere up here. Lots of wet ground.  Easy to pull out though wpp. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
