sorry looking rose.

Hello everybody , would like advise on how to look after this very sorry looking rose. I don't know its name , it has dark red flowers which now only grow at the very top of the tree. It`s over 20 years old

    Hi Wendy image

I would cut the rose right back to a couple of feet from the ground and give it a sprinkling of Fish Blood and Bone and a good mulching with some well rotted farmyard manure (not touching the stems).

Hopefully it will then shoot again from the roots and the base of the plant, and you can train it as shown in this thread http://www.gardenersworld.com/forum/plants/rose-pruning/258467.html

Dove is spot on, and I would do it now. Apparently the Romans used to prune roses quite late to make them flower later.

  • Many thanks Dove and Art , will see to it tomorrow .Thank you again .
