graham, the problem may be that the decking has been oiled at some stage and could repel any paint. If you know the 'history' of the decking from new and what it had been treated with before it was bought, then you could contact the technical dept at Dulux or Rustins etc and ask their advice. I have always, as a paint professional, found these tech people very helpful, but you DO need to know the surface that you are dealing with.
Graham you can get black decking stain from B&Q, there will be other suppliers too.
If you google it you will get loads of results, so take your pick.
thank you dave been to b&q got paint now problem solved
Artjak - thank you! We spent ages staining a large decking last year only for it to fail badly. This could be the reason as it was previously oiled. We thought stain would be ok but it is peeling off like paint would. Now I think we will have to get someone in to redo the lot - strip it and treat it.
Hello we painted our deck black it took 2 coats but we love it and we feel it's a lot nicer than a varnish, we used ronseal in charcoal colour but it's come out black and looks fab
