Maiden fruit tree
in Fruit & veg
Hi this is my first post although I read the forum most days. I recently planted two maiden apple trees, James Grieve and rosette. I want to train these as 3 tier espalier against my fence so I did some research on the web and followed a video on YouTube. The problem is now that I've planted them a foot from the fence as advised in the video they look too far away from the fence! is a foot to far?

I think it'll be fine - as they grow you'll just train them against the fence - but the wires will be several inches proud of the fence so they're not as far out as they look now.

Thanks Dove I just wanted to check with more experienced gardeners just incase I needed to reposition it before it became established. I planted it last weekend but I didn't shorten the trunk, that's one of my jobs this weekend.
I've now cut the main trunk down to 1ft, the second tree was easy but I was dithering over the first tree and took about 5 minutes to make the cut. I'm going to have to figure out how to protect the tree from my youngest and prevent him hurting himself by falling onto it. A quick question, when I've been looking at espalier fruit trees 3 tiers seems the normal amount but I was hoping for four on my trees, is 4 tiers ok?
I'm sure I've seen 4 tiers - but it'll take a good long while to get there - my pear is still at the one tier stage .... good luck
