Raised veg beds next to hedge

Hi, we have recently moved and I want to install about 4 raised veg beds at the end of the garden next to the boundary hedge - I think it's hawthorn (I'm new to gardening!).

I've heard that you should leave some distance between the hedge and beds to prevent the hedge roots sucking up all the water in the soil. I am willing to get the hose pipe on the veg if it's not rained for a while but is that good enough?

I'd be grateful for advice on this matter. Thanks all.

Hi Melanie, Depending on the depth of your raised beds, you could line the bottom of them with weed suppressing membrane which will prevent the roots of the hedge growing upwards into the beds (which is the main problem.)  If your beds are 30cm or deeper there will still be plenty of soil depth for the vast majority of veg., before their roots reach the membrane.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks Bob. What veg may a membrane not be suitable for? I may do some with and some without.
