Flooded garden concerns re crop planting

Hi all,

just wondered if anyone could give some advice? We were lucky and only had flooding in our gardens for a few days each time it got bad and none in the house but our worry is the possible contamination it may have caused to the soil.

It's still pretty waterlogged and the lawn is mostly mud but we are worried about growing potatoes and onions this year as they were directly in the ground (only a small crop but the results were worth it!). Tomatoes, sald crops etc we have in pots and troughs, so no worries there.

Any thoughts or advice on growing food crops in the ground this year?

I would be tempted to leave it this year as you never know what oils / fuels / septic tanks / dead animals have been flowing through the water that your garden has now absorbed.

Have you thought about growing your potatoes in bags instead? I watched a video Monty made somewhere on this site about growing potatoes in a compost bag so it wouldn't need to be a specialist bit of kit to buy and would keep your mind at ease. The soil once you're finished with it can then be dug into the garden to help replace nutrients.

    Hi Gerry

Where are you?  Somerset or Thames Valley?
