...I like Rugosa's very much but for a beginner, I would suggest going with the modern flow of things and buy the rose of the year 2014 'Lady Marmalade' which you can now find in all garden centres.... if you don't mind that colour....
I can also recommend www.handleyrosenurseries.co.UK. I bought my two climbing roses from them. The website is very informative so made picking the roses that were right for my garden easier.
You don't say which colours you like or if you prefer double or single flowers. I love David Austin roses, mentioned above. Look old fashioned, but are modern so repeat flower, smell lovely and many are disease resistant. Don't need loads of pruning as are shrub roses.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Lizzie - i read here recently that shrub roses don't need much pruning - mine are now going in to their fourth year, and up to now i have pruned them quite hard. This year i have left them alone apart from getting rid of dead stems - is this a good plan, or should i get out there tomorrow and take them back a bit?
NewBoy - my personal favourite (and makes it onto a lot of recommended lists) is Gertrude Jekyll - bright pink and gorgeous smell
Shrub roses that don't repeat need a very light prune, just to tidy up, and removal of dead wood. Shrub roses that repeat flower need a light prune, can shorten by up to a third and remove oldest and dead stems. HT roses need a hard prune.

I'd go for a bush or shrub rose with plenty of scent myself, but it's great fun choosing one.

Thanks Lizzie - all mine are repeat flowerers, so will go and do some judicious snipping tomorrow after all!
