...I think it is just as well Verdun and I are not married... wouldn't last long...lol...
..but just to add that I prefer to inform newcomers to gardening that you 'can do' rather than 'don't do'... when it seems reasonable to do so.... that's all really.... this method wouldn't suit everyone, some gardeners like to see clear outlines to their plants and this just wouldn't do... that's fair enough...
...I plan to grow a Clematis texensis variety over mine this year... either 'Princess Diana' or 'Gravetye Beauty'... but I've found that last one difficult in the past...
..this is the difference isn't it Verdun... I think you like very much Adrian Bloom's style of gardening, and his garden at Foggy Bottom... however, from what I've seen of it, it doesn't appeal to me greatly.. although I've not been there... and island beds never did much for me either.. of which he was a proponent I think... something far too organised about them... I don't know..lol... but saying that, unlike a lot of people.. I'm very fond of conifers and heathers.. especially dwarfing or slow conifers, with a slim outline... I like these very much.... as opposed to the big bulky ones....
..my favourites so far, are:- Thuja 'Emerald'.... Thuja 'Brobeck Tower'... and Chamaecyparis 'Van Pelt's Blue'...
I just adore these... I wonder if anyone else grows them here...?
This thread brings back lovely memories of a holiday we spent in 1995 at Alan Bloom's nursery/gardens/guest house in 1995. I still have the copy of his book "Come you back, boy" which he signed for me. We had a lovely evening with him. Ever since I have been a fan of grasses, perennials and heathers and am now lucky enough to be living close to Knoll Gardens in Dorset - a wonderful place and winner of numerous Chelsea Golds.

Salino, I've grown Princess Diana for years now and "she's" never let me down. A real beauty.
..that's nice... I hope I have as much success...
...I must look up Knoll gardens.. don't know that one...
I've just bought Texensis Duchess of Albany. Not sure how different it will be to Diana.
