Yo Dunc bro!! And Panda - glad it's not just me. I got into Gardener's World when Geoff Hamilton was the main man - whose watchwords seemed to be 'economical', 'organic' and 'make-your-own'. I loved his approach because it reminded me of my dad's. I like Monty and Carol too, but didn't much care for the 'which you can buy from your local garden centre' approach in the intervening period.
I wouldn't put either of the quinces on a north facing all unless you life in Turkey or you're growing just for flower. The Japanese quinces can be as fruitful as the Cydonia, you just have to choose carefully.
