Thanks Salino. That is reassuring. I'm such a stress head. I finally made the decision to get rid of it, because I thought every time I look at it, it will stress me out, ha! It was such a shame because it was instant gratification buying it and planting out such a big plant, which I can't usually afford.
Anyway to cut a long story short, my girlfriend won't allow me to get rid of it because she's always wanted one. So now I just have to deal with it. I'm going to just get a rhizome barrier and hope for the best.
..no worries Jack... all will be well.... if we spent all our time worrying about what we plant in our gardens, we'd never bother... they're lovely looking plants, so architectural... I grow a much smaller type of bamboo called Fargesia 'Rufa'... if you ever see that one I recommend it too.. for a tropical effect... it's slower growing and takes a few years to make an impact.... but you will probably have sold up and moved on well before then...
Verdun, I really do appreciate your feedback/advice. It's so good to get all the different angles, so as to be able to make the best decision. I still might talk my girlfriend out of it, I'd love to wait until my birthday and buy a nice big red robin or something and put that there instead. The reason for buying it was I'm trying to make a secluded area at the end of the garden, where I have built a rain shelter to sit in and read. There's some gaps that need filling to make it secluded.
Thanks Salino, in retrospect I would have just waited and got something that doesn't need to much watching, Thanks for the recommendation though. I did buy it for the instant visual impact and lovely sound it makes.
Thanks Verdun, that is a great idea. I love the look of the ones you mentioned. I never even thought of grasses as an option. I will have to check out B and Q.
Hiya, I bought two Golden Bamboo plants from Homebase yesterday. I've google'd it today as a friend told me that they can spread. I have the tags which read Golden Bamboo 'Phyllostachys Aurea' Shapely Plant. It also says Vigorous spreading habit - keep plant confined. Hope this helps. Reason to buy: Ideal for screening. Think I will have to consider how I plant now, having read this forum, as I want them to fill gaps up against trellis. Ang1
Hiya, I have just found this forum as I too bought two Golden Bamboo plants from Homebase yesterday. I google'd them as a friend told me today there are two different types and one type does spread. I still have the tags which say 'Golden Bamboo Phyllostachys Aurea' 'Shapely Plant'. It says grows up to 4m tall and 2.5m across. Evergreen. Vigorous spreading habit - keep plant confined. Reason to buy 'Ideal for Screening'. Think I will need to consider something to stop the vigorous spread too. Hope this helps.
