Senior moment right enough .I was thinking of Pittosporum not Physocarpus. image

I've steered away from Pittosporum  because of the  hardiness issue although I love the look of many of them. I can't be doing with stuff I have to mollycoddle too much!

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Anne Folkard is a favourite of mine. I've grown it with Euphorbias which picked up the foliage colour , Sedum sp 'Brilliant', and a  bronze dwarf Phormium. I think some of the purple foliage plants can be a bit dull if they're not teamed up well with other things. I don't like the Cotinus flowers Verd so I've not grown it for a while - the Sambucus is the same for me - I'd have to go round chopping the flowers off! image

Verdun, when do you cut your 'diabolo' hard?  I have one that is several years old, been frozen hard and drowned, but gives the most stunning foliage year after year.  I don't reckon the title pink flowers much, but the leaves ………   I've never really known when or how hard to prune it, just take bits off when the fancy takes me.

I've got blue cammasia in front of it, followed by bears breeches, with various hardy geraniums and grasses everywhere.  Not much organisation to my gardening really.

    Well....

    re the original post.

It wasn't dead but there were a lot of branches that were dead. New growth appeared through the summer but now it's looking dead again.

I think it will have to go.image

It's in very poor dumped soil with added rubbish. What would cope well with that?

Don't give up yet! Ours looks dead in Winter but I can see tiny red leaf buds.  We also have a dwarf version of Diablo, called "Little Devil".  Unlike the Diablo it kept its leaves throughout winter.  Our dwarf plants already have suckering shoots from which we can take offcuts. We may have a spare offcut of the dwarf if you can wait till Spring. With lovely chocolate leaves, beautiful blossom and red berries, and it can take hard pruning, I'm surprised they are not more widely known.  Our local nursery also sells other hydrids ranging from acid yellow to red/orange leaves, very tempting to have more.
