Help with shaded area
Hi I'm new, I have a nice sized back garden with a boarded lawn. The garden is n/w facing I think. The size of the garden that is I front of the house doesn't get sun till the afternoon as the house blocks the light so we have a patio. The far end gets light all day bar the left hand boarder with out fence blocks the sun from. All day as try sun come over the fence blocks the boarder. It currently has 2 6ft rose bushes but it only flowers at the top in summer. And it has no leaves lower down either. What I need to know is what else can I put in the boarder to make the most of it before I decide to turf it instead. I want a large flowering bush/shrub or a climbing plant. If like it to get to 3ft + to cover part of the 6ft fence. And give done nice colour to my garden. On the other boarder I have to green leaf bushes and 2 large old apple trees and some Lillie's. I'd like more colour to my garden. Any tips will be greatful. The empty soil is around 5/6ft long by1/2 ft from fence to lawn

I'll bump this up for you Poppy
I'd cut those rose back very hard and if it's too shady for them have them out.
What sort of soil have you got?
In the sticks near Peterborough

Try this link, a specialist for shade loving plants. There is another good guide on the RHS website. Have fun choosing, plenty there.
You can get clematis that tolerate shade. Lovely climbing plant with big flowers and they can flower from June right through to September. See http://www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/clematis-by-aspect/
They can grow between 6-8 foot if they're happy and you can choose from a variety of colours.
what a brilliant thread and great advice, I have a shady area behind one of my apple trees and along my hedge in side garden.
