I have a white round growth on my concrete paving stones (not slabs) ,jet washed nothing ,most freely available cleaners nothing, so far all that has worked is brick acid and using a power drill with a wire brush head but boy is that hard work 2 hours on your knees and 1square meter , HELP !!!!! Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
That sounds REALLY painful, mjtclayton! The abrasive properties of sharp 'builders sand' should not be forgotten. Used in combination with a stiff yard brush and water, you could achieve much the same result without recourse to any chemical agents...??
I would love it if our terrace developed lichens - have you seen the price of aged stone troughs with lichen on them? http://www.leorec.co.uk/troughs.htm
I think this might be a case for the Envy thread

I've achieved a similar ageing process in Barbados on stone work using natural yoghurt; unfortunately they only sold it in tiny pots... then (because it was hot there) water it gently every few days.
