Makes you wonder what the purpose of the letter 'k' actually is.  Why do we have the letters 'k' 'c' and 's', but there are only two sounds between them?  And what is the purpose of silent 'k' in 'knot' or 'g' in 'gnat'?  There will come a time when they will be dropped.

In Glasgow, they kept talking about the 'area', it was, I think, the steps to a block of flats,.

Not heard of that term - communal areas and stairs are called the 'close' and that is used across Scotland.  Area to me would be synonymous with neighbourhood. Traditionally in Scottish towns back gardens are 'back courts' and specific gardens, enclosed for fruit and veg, are 'yards'.

I've heard 'area' as a paved bit outside the back of a terrace house. It's not local to me though so I may have misunderstood
