The composts were developed at the John Innes Institute, named after one John Innes, a nineteenth century property and land dealer in the City of London.

Thanks, so can any company put the John Innes name to their compost, assuming the mixture is correct?

Yes, John Innes is a formula rather than a brand name i.e. you can buy Arthur Bowers, John Innes compost.
