I think the caterpillar varies and there is a brown form. I think because it is mild there are a few caterpillars about being more active. Here is a picture of one of mine.
Sorry, had to kill all the ones I found in my garden (Nr Norwich), they were decimating my polyanthus and primroses, also had some dropping off my overwintering geraniums.
