I dont't go clubbing/pubbing. I don't need to pay a gym subscription. I didn't need to buy veg and not much fruit from June to end of October. I still have a lot of my own onions, and jam, and apples in the freezer.

Cost of a decent size garden---- ridiculous

How much do  I spend each year? as much or as little as I want. some years very little. Last year, I joined this forum and got a bit carried away at new nurseries.image

..the pleasure is priceless and cannot always be described.... a single specimen of the right plant can be fascinating at all times of year... that's how I see it...

Ooh yes, you should see my new double yellow hellebore........

  • we eat a lot of peppers, tomatoes and basil

with the increase of prices I will be happy to grow 4lb of tomatoes this year and 10 red bell peppers as ten peppers will cost you £8.00 I shall also be growing basil to protect my toms from aphids

can you really put a price on a hobby that give so much back and not just veg crops what about mental state and piece of mind and exercise I just look at it that way.

    Clueless

Wonderfully put Clueless. It would perhaps be better to think about what you SAVE from gardening rather than what you spend. We also eat a lot of peppers, chillis, tomatoes, basil... all of which I hope to grow enjoy and maybe even freeze / dry this year (not to mention a few others like garlic and onion which are already in the ground and strawberries which I fear may well not make it back to the house before they're munched upon!) To give our fridge and bellies some much preferred low mileage meals.

I could be spending £30 a month on gym membership: the more I exercise the better muscles I build the more stretched the scar tissue becomes and thus the less painkillers I need, the less trips to the chemist for tablets to counteract the side effects of the first handful of drugs.

I could be spending hundreds of pounds both of my own and the NHS on counselling for the depression I suffer.

I could be spending my spare cash on chocolate and junk to feed my boredom rather than adding loose change to my pot for spending on treats in the garden. Of course all that chocolate means buying bigger trousers!

Or I could be out in my wellies paddling in the mud enjoying myself, getting the exercise I need, letting the breeze blow away the depression and the garden help save my health (reducing risks of diabetes, heart disease...) if not the wardrobe (you can never have enough gardening clothes).

And that's what I'll be telling myself when I'm next in the garden centreimage

Hello Clarington I have just read your post with interest. When I asked if people counted the cost of gardening  I made a small wager with some of my allotment friends that not many people would be bothered. After seeing the first replies I said in a post that folks who gardened did it for love and beggar the cost I meself have gardened for more years than I can think of.I havent bought any veg in years or soft fruits I am type 2 diabetic but the exercise I get digging plus cycling to me plot keeps me fit and I like think sane.My wife thinks I'm nutsbut she loves me really.I'm 74 this year. Keep up the gardening Clarington and as Winston Churchill said Keep buggering on.
