I do know Creosote is banned, I have some old stock and wondered if it would do as a tar wash for my fruit trees, I also have Jayes Fluid, has anyone used that ?.

    See original post

... The previous owner of my house left a time of Jeyes fluid that's knocking about my shed.  It's at least ten years old - what's it for and/or how can you dispose of it?

  • I think even the most ardent chemical user would not have  used creosote unless they wanted to kill the treeimage

Jeys fluid is a coal tar based disinfectant for outdoor use -  disinfecting drains, cleaning animal cages, cleaning pots & trays etc. It is no longer licenced for use as a winter wash, removing moss from paths etc  just Google Jeys fluid & you you get all the info on their website. You can still buy it but its uses are (rightly in many peoples opinion) much restricted now. If you want rid of your old tin take it to you local authority waste tip do not just put it in the bin.

Be aware that Jeyes Fluid, despite being incredibly toxic to them is very attractive to cats ... many have had agonising deaths as a result of lapping up a little spilt Jeyes Fluid.

  • Sorry for resurrecting on old thread. What's the consensus here? Is there a product that I can buy that you can recommend?

I’ve not used it … I no longer have fruit trees … but I think Vitax are a reputable brand … I’ve certainly had no complaints about any of their other products I’ve used.
