Hornbeam Hedging Question

Hi all,
I am planning to put a Hornbeam hedge round the perimeter of my back garden as it is against an old fence I want it to grow about 8 feet high to give me some privacy. The ground is very heavy wet clay so I think this species is the best option.
My big question is should I plant a single row or a double staggered row?

Double staggered is best and will give a good result. Do not plant too near to the fence, you will want to get round the back of it.
