Need tall plants for patio
in Plants
Hello, my garden patio is about 5 metres depth and the neighbours fence for that 5m is low and I want to create a bit more privacy.
So need to plant something in tubs that is quite tall, about 5 - 6 foot max height.
I'm stumped for ideas. A visit to the garden centre this morning didn't inspire any ideas. Can anyone suggest anything? Preferably something that will grown quick, or already 3ft+ in height already.

Is it a sunny spot? If you can fit trellis or a cane tripod in your tubs there are lots of Clematis that will grow that tall very quickly if you can get a two year old or more plant, a lot of them flower for a long time. (try www.taylorsclematis.co.uk) For a quick fix this year you could plant sweet peas or do you want something evergreen?
I had bought some sweet pea seeds and I'll probably put those somewhere on the patio, maybe against the fence to create a wall of flowers, but seriously considering something evergreen in large tubs, but just don't know what to go for.
How about something simple like an ivy of some sort in one container then in another a clematis you like the look of that can climb amongst the evergreen ivy then flower when its ready. That way you get the evergreen screening plus some lovely flowers. Failing that you could just stick with one evergreen climber. Pyracantha will produce lots of berries in autumn. There is also a few evergreen Loniceras which have beautiful flowers such as the L. jap 'Halliana'.
What about some bamboo? Should be safe in a pot?
Lemon cypress trees do well in pots and grow quickly. Bamboo like Fargesia 'asian wonder' would work well and grow fast inot a thick screen, evergreens like Loquat, Camellia etc will also work.
Failing that, just put up a fence in front of theirs on your side of the boundary. No one likes sitting facing neighbours!
We have a 6+ft trellis 'fence' alongside our patio to screen it from the side - we are growing a grapevine on it - we don't mind that it's deciduous as we don't sit outside a great deal in the winter (not this winter anyway!) and if we do the trellis provides enough privacy, the neighbours aren't outside in the winter.
Don't know whether you've got planting space for a vine, but if you use a large container two or three Clematis alpina would cover that area quite quickly and look very attractive.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Thanks very much for your replies. I've already got some sweet peas (both mixed and a blue colour) starting to germinate in the kitchen. Will be sowing some more over the coming weeks.
Saw some great looking camellias, about 3ft high, down the local garden centre the other day. But was about £70. Also seen a great trellis planter online for about £150, just the size I want, but might just improvise with some cheapo pots and canes for this year.
Any other suggestions more than welcome.
It is worth looking for private nurseries where you may find plants cheaper. !
