Nut's one is Butcher's Broom, as she says, it's too prickly for floristry. Grows wild in the woods round here.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Sorry people!  Not a quiz.   No, it is nothing like a fern and nor is it at all prickly.  The leaves are about 2 inches long, similar shape to privet but much paler, slightly arched and not leathery.  The 'flowers' are appearing on both the top or bottom of the leaf, about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch long, white, have a longish bit that then opens out into a starry shape rather like the individual flower heads on cow parsley etc that grows on the roadsides.

  • Possibly myrtle?

  • That is a possibility.  Not quite like in the photo so will have a search to see if is a different variety.   Thank you.

  • No, don't think it is a type of Myrtle.  The really odd thing is that these tiny flowers are mostly sprouting from under the leaf with not as many from the top of the leaf.  They send out a fine shoot with one or two branches with then has a tiny white flower with 6 spokes rather than petals.  Weird!

  • Hi everyone don't post very often as everyone is so knowledgable and I learn loads from reading your posts, so thank you all for that.

I think your greenery is Gaultheria shallon (salal) I have used this in flower arranging before. I can only get it from a florist. I did try to take semi ripe cuttings once but sadly without success. It really is lovely and lasts for ages In arrangements. Hope this helps,

  • Just looked at old notes on flower arranging and Ruscus is also a possibility Doris. I still can't get the photo up. Good luck
