Thanks all. Sorry for the late response, I've been out gardening yay for a bit of sun. Yes the edging was a very hard frost. I went and looked at all the photinias at the garden centre (they had just red robin I think) and they weren't a patch on the colours this one got. It really was vibrant and mainly purple but almost orange in places. My photinia and the ones opposite are rather dull at the moment with very little colour at all. I will take a look at the above suggestions a bit later though (when I've demudded myself

..possibly Photinia davidiana... what used to be called Stranvaesia... the leaves turn purple in winter, although the plant usually has berries...
