I'm also on clay - every garden I've had is the same. The only advantage I have is that a couple of them have been fairly blank canvasses so the new beds or borders I've been creating have a better medium for me to start planting. It does involve a bit of cost though with soil and compost to fill them. I'd agree with Verdun and Jess though - improve the soil by all means - but work with what you have. Right plant right place is the old adage, so if you want to grow plants which don't suit your conditions, use pots and containers instead, or make raised beds to give them the best chance of doing well.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
