Creosote

does anyone know  if creosote is band from being used (I thought it was )

BIG PROBLEM.    our neighbours paint their shed & fence with it  in the summer &it smells so toxic ,it makes your eyes water , even my washing after I had brought it in from the washing line smelt of it .it was such a lovely summer &as the sun went on it , it intensified it to a point that another neighbour from the road at the back of ours came around and thought that  somebody had fumes leaking from their gas boiler. One beautiful afternoon we were eating outside and had to take our food in because it was so bad ,it took a few weeks to wear away . the worrying thing is they still have one side of a long long fence to do this summer . Would appreciate any help

Thanks Annieimage

Thanks Nutcutlet I read the summary it was very informative I am going to print it Off ready to show the neigbour

Thanks Verdun yes your right even when it rains it enhances the stench, it's not good for them either because they must be breathing it in  while they are painting the fence . Not very good for the enviroment either . Got all the info now ready for summer

    Thanks again  Annieimage

  • creosote is banned and you cant buy it any more[not the real thing anyway] . It might be old stock they were using up from the shed or it could be the new stuff they make which has all the hamful stuff taken out but smells just as bad they probably haven,t done anything wrong . Hope this helps.

Creosote, whilst having a noxious smell and toxic properties, was more effective at protecting outdoor wood than most modern paint-type substitutes - it also enhanced the texture of the grain of fences and sheds to advantage.

I now use something called Creocote, which is oil-based - it soaks into the wood like creosote, and the smell is a less strong version of creosote, and only lingers for 24 hours at most.

  • The really important thing here is that you seem to have very inconsiderate or ignorant neighbours. Do you get on with them?

So did my father-in-law - bit like using Wrights coal-tar soap when I was a kid - lovely smells ( but in moderation, I suppose - wouldn't like Annie8's problems with the smell from next door!)

no joe we have never fallen out , mainly because we really don't come in contact that much ,not really my neighbour   , only a small part of the back garden meets his ( I am pleased to say ) but know of him ; inconsiderate ..... tick , ignorant ......tick

but to his close neighbours a real pain in the aspidistra haaaaa !!!

Michael 6 you could be right it will be old stuff (he inherited his fathers old house a few years ago) and he keeps everything .

    Thanks everyone for your help

From Brumbull's post it would seem that they can't even use the creosote any more even if it was purchases a couple of years ago.  I certainly wouldn't go so far as to say the neighbour is being inconsiderate.  They've probably used creosote for years and just consider the smell as part of the process.

The law changes and people simply don't know of the changes.  It's nothing to do with not caring or not considering other people.
