Is it too late to mow a lawn with very long grass? If I did would the grass die? I live in the North East of England.

    No-grass wont dieimage

It has probably stopped growing now-when the temperature drop to around 8-10C it tends to come to a stop.

You can cut if you want to-just not too short-blades set high-not if it is too wet or frosty-just a matter of picking the right moment

  • I live in the North East as well,  Middlesbrough in fact,  I cut my grass the 2nd week in November before all the rains came but it's slowed down a lot now with the cold weather so will be Spring before the next one.

I would like some advice on feeding the lawn in spring. In the past I have spread feed and weed all over the grass in spring but have had black patches and then holes appearing in the grass. What have I done wrong and how should I cope with feeding this year. I have not touched the grass yet as it is too cold but the grass is growing and looks untidy. Thanks.

There's sun shining and I really need to get the grass cut, but there was a thick frost last night and it's still chilly. Will I damage the grass if I cut it now?

I'd guess your black patches are where the feed n weed has killed off the moss so rake that out and in time the grass will come back and you can add a bit of grass seed to help it along. Sometimes if you're a bit heavy handed with the stuff it burns the grass a bit too -been there! You may just need to aereate the lawn and the site of the lawn is important so if it's shady it can have a big effect. Not sure what you mean about holes? Do you just mean bare patches?

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Well do not cut if it has frost on it-give it a light trim with the blades set high then gradually lower the blades at each cut over the coming weeks

    Never scalp itimage

  • Can I please register a vote for dandelions which our parents all taught us to loathe. They are a great source of food for the bees etc. in early summer. It is also a beautiful plant, great flower, reliable, disease free, lovely cut leaf, prolific etc.etc. ...what more do you want in a plant??

Patabee, yellow trefoil often appears after you kill off the other weeds as it colonises the open spaces left. You did the right thing by spraying again with a specific weedkiller.

Hi Fsirygirl, thsnks for your helpful advice snd yes I probably am heavy handed with the spreading and caused bald/bare patches in the grass as a result.  (I did mean bare patches).  Is there a way of perhaps adding something to the feed mix to thin it out - perhaps some compost of sand?  Its lovely and sunny here today but very cold and frosty at night, so when would be the best time to do this?
