What's eating my plants

I'm fairly new to gardnening and have spent the last 3 years starting a new garden from scratch. Finally we've had a mild winter so the plants have actually survived but now something's eating them from the top down so I don't think it's slugs. The acuba, cape fuchsias, buddleja have all taken a battering for a start, any ideas what it might be and how I protect them?
