Aphids (greenfly) often carry viruses which will weaken the plant. They suck the sap of the plant to live, and can produce live young asexually,(without a male) at a rate of knots.

  • what do you mean at the rate of knots image

Very quick. Aphids breed faster than rabbits.

If the roses are outside, you could try hanging a fat ball over the plant on a string. The blue tits will come for the fat ball, and while they are waiting their turn, they will eat your greenfly as well.

Fidget, what a fab idea, thank you I would never have thought of that.....another note for my notebook image

I use washing up liquid in water and spray it on, quite a strong solution. I can't remember where I learnt that from but done it for years now and it works. Will definitely be trying the fat ball now though image
  • If you see ladybugs on your roses then just leave them as they eat aphids.
