Lovely pictures & lilies Bill. Glad you can again post pictures
Maybe silly question but do you have any problems with lily beetles?
How you doing?
Doesn't look like he does Kef,
sorry, i'll put myself on the naughty step.
Lovely pics Bill, is that a stargazer i see?
KEF the beetles are terrible here so when the lilies have started to grow I check them in the morning and again in the evening.I hand pick them then crush them under my boot, being red they are easy to see. KEF the back of my house faces South and the west side of garden is loaded with lilies and red beetles, the east side also has lots of lilies but not one red beetle.I really don't know why. Yard is 45 Ft wide.
Star gaze lily that sure is and its a beautiful lily
Bill
We grow large numbers of lilies, mostly in pots, but a few in the ground. I also go around - with a tea strainer - once the lily beetles appear, and do a dance of joy as I kill them on the paths. Twice a day watchfulness, plus the odd one spotted out of the kitchen window keeps the infestation to the almost manageable status. Some lilies are more attacked than others, one or two small yellow ground grown ones are just used as sacrificial plants, upon which I can catch and kill larger numbers of the red devils, thus hopefully protecting the others. Also grow fritillaries which they are supposed to like, but so far, thank goodness, have not found the beetles on those - enough lilies to keep them busy I suppose.
Hi Tracey, your lilies will be a few weeks yet before you see any growth on them - don't worry, I'm sure you won't have killed them. I have a lot of my lilies in pots and I store them in my unheated greenhouse, as a precaution for Winter. With the mild weather we have had so far, I doubt your bulbs would be killed off even if you have left them in pots outside!
