Mine is called a Tracmaster. Petrol, borderline industrial. I can't totally recommend it, it lets too many 'sticks' come out the other end. Though maybe a good servicing and tightening up would fix that. It certainly eats prunings and branches up to about 3or 4 inches very quickly indeed. It doesn't get 3 inch logs though, that's firewood
I've just put a heap of wet privet through. Privet is the worst thing I shred, I'd forgotten how horrible it is. The green parts bung the thing up, the long straight bits shoot through without shredding and, being wet, it was twice as bad as usual.
But it's done and I've had a shower so I may survive til the other 2/3 of the hedge gets done. More than usual this year as we're taking most of it down from about 10 foot to 3 foot approx. That's chainsaw hedging and logs for the stove. Plus another shredding mountain
Used my new shredder today, it's a Titan 2500 W Rapid Shredder. Used it on privet which I don't think it particularly liked. It was ok with the straight rods but then when it got to the bush tops I couldn't thread them through. Had to cut side twigs and bush tops off. That said it chipped the rest into bit about 6 mm long, which I then spread straight on the border. Also it was pretty quiet so overall happy with that!
I think there are two different types of shredders. One has a spinning blade and slices the cuttings. The other mashes/crushes the cuttings with a cog.
One is good for dry cuttings only, such as stems, slim branches etc. The other will cope better with wet cuttings such as from a freshly cut hedge.
I have a Bosch AXT shredder which is great for dry cuttings, but not so for green wet cuttings.
Thanks Verdun I will only be applying them to beds at this time of year and add the to composter during growing season. The shredder I have has a big spinning metal disk inside with the blade like the part of the cheese grater that does slices, which is that best for?

True Verdun but I find the moisture retention makes up for any other drawbacks
