  • Iron Sequestrene is a good tonic for camellias as it helps them take up nutrients you are feeding them. They hate early morning sun and frosts damage the flowers without fail. Rainwater only (occasional tapwater is OK) and lots of it in late summer/autumn to help flowerbud formation. Eriaceous compost only in pots, and daily "cup of tea" is good. You can eat the cake.

  • My camellia leaves turned brown lots of buds that turned brown & never opened.

My camellias are trees.  Have  been shaped in the past but not touched for a few years.  The ground nearby has become very wet.  They flowered profusely however, but now the leaves are yellowing.  They are on the edge of a wood and there is lots of leaf mould around.  Ideal conditions one would have thought although an azalea next door also didn't seem happy but has recovered.  Any further clues?

We are getting close to the time when next year's flower buds start forming so I wouldn't prune now.  Give it a good feed of slow release rose or tomato food to help with that and make sure it gets plenty to drink between now and November or you will get bud drop.

Water with rain water and added sequestered or chelated iron to help it take up minerals and give it a foliar feed of 5litres of water mixed with 15ml of Epsom salts.  Sprinkle a tbs of the salts around the base of the plant too.   This will provide magnesium which is also important for healthy plants and can't be taken up by acid loving plants if there is calcium present in the soil or water.

See how it responds and then prune out any obvious dead wood and then prune it to a good shape and size after flowering next spring.

When it was blown over, did you inspect the base part of the plant. Areas between roots and shoots which could be deep under the soil. There may be a tear or when you put it back up, there may be an air pocket in the soil. The plant looks like it's not receiving vital food and possibly water. The bark is stripped.

  • My white Camellia is about 2 and half metres tall it is perfectly green on the south side facing but has been suffering from yellowing leaves on the north face side and it seems the yellowing leaves are spreading over the whole tree this year. The side where the leafs are yellowing does not look healthy at all as they are falling off leaving bare branches in some places. Flowers on the yellow leaf side come out look beautiful and turn brown in a day, on the other side they last for ages? What can I do.image
