Wet sioil

Hi I've lifted some membraine front my front garden, I have bought some nice shrubs to plant, but the ground is very muddy, is it best to wait till it drys out

  • Anne, assuming it doesn't rain, dig a hole of the size you would use if planting and leave it for a few hours.  If a puddle forms at the bottom then avoid planting (that indicates the soil is waterlogged.)  If no puddle forms then drainage is ok and you are probably good to go.

  • Also, if when you are treading around on the soil and its oozing out water and you sink into the soil, then you are driving out the air from the soil and destroying its structure - leave it for another day.

    I totally endorse the previous comments. I'd also add ,depending upon what was on top of the membrane,and how long the ground has been left undisturbed, it might be very compacted and might need some attention before planting. 

    If you can, I'd take the opportunity to dig the whole area and incorporate well rotted garden compost / manure and gritty material if drainage is a problem before starting planting.
