Pruning Leylandii

We need to trim a neighbours hedge and want to do it this month.  We know it's not an ideal time but will it be harmful?

so long as you don't cut into old brown wood, you should be fine. Birds don't usually start nesting until February so January will be better for them too as you won't disturb their nesting / nest building.

    Devon.
  • I agree with Hostafan1, it is extremely important to leave some green foliage.

The cuts will let the frost in and will then probably be very conspicuous (turning white) for quite a long time until new growth takes over.

  • Or of course, you could do the world a favour and kill the darned things! image

  • Yes, they really aught to come with a 'Garden Health Warning'....
