Inula Hookeri

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what plants would complement Inula? The plant is in a south facing sunny position.

Thanks

  • Not sure if my Inula is this variety, but it is quite large, and it always flops, about 4-5 feet across. Good yellow colour so add something brick-red such as gaillardia.

My advice with Inula is to beware of self seeding. Mine seeded everywhere and, at first, I was thrilled, but , as wonderboy says, they're big and have a great  root system. Whip out any unwanted seedlings early . They look lovely with a vigorous catmint like Six Hills Giant.

  • Have tried to grow them here in Cheshire but my soil is very sandy - they just give up the ghost! Match them with something Sky Blue - lovely!

or a purple leaved shrub, sambucus maybe.

I don't think I. hookeri is as tall as WW's but spreads well.

Hmm, I posted some suggestions last night then lost the post and gave up and had a G&T image

The suggestions I came up with were:

    Echinops globe thistles

Actea James Compton or similar with dark purplish red foliage

    Lobelia Vedrariensis

Some of the grasses with reddish purplish tinged flowers would also look good, e.g. Miscanthus Sinensis Morning Light

Just thought of something else - Perovskia Blue Spire (Russian Sage) - would look great image

  • Thank you all for your suggestions. I enjoy this time of  year when nothing much can be done outside so plans can be made to improve areas of dissatisfaction. You have helped enormously. Thank you.

  • Lots of different suggestions coming through - will try and have another go with the plant and see if I can get them going - the blue and yellow colour match always looks good especially with Iris's with I have and hopefully they will reappear this year

  • Hello...we were given a clump of Inula Hookeri...we put it in a large tub and it looks great sprouting loads of buds...unfortunately some of the leaves below are turning yellow...can someone tell me why this is and what do we do about it please...Laurence

I've got them planted in front of crocosmia Lucifer and a tall orange crocosmia. Sets them off really nicely.
