    Nice KEF, I love them

Bob I think my red delavayi has flowered less since shade completely overtook it but they don't mind some and flowers last in better colour for longer in shade. An enormous Portugal laurel is going to get a haircut I reckon, let a bit of light back in.

Hi - Does anyone know the best time to move an herbaceous peony? I have one that has been in the same spot for many years but just has to move. Also, could it be divided or would that just finish it off?

Peonies are quite easy to grow with few requirements. Herbaceous peonies need to be planted with the crowns just barely beneath the soil. Planting them too deeply is a common reason they can fail to bloom. They are best planted or moved in the autumn. However, they are a bit like a teenager in the morning and do not like to be disturbed. Best not to disturb them unless you really have to! Most like full sun and a well drained location. They also resent being overshadowed by other plants. Don't place peonies in the same location where one has been before to avoid using worn out soil as they are hungry plants and will reduce the danger of passing on any peony diseases. The single or semi double peonies are in my opinion the ones to go for rather than the double flowered pomp-poems. They are less likely to fill up with water and fall over in this country. I personally prefer to see them with roses and other cottage garden plants because they only flower for a short period. They are however all the more special because of the wait! Tree peonies are glorious but expensive to buy. I don't have any in my garden but go to RHS Wisley to get my yearly fix.

I agree re the pompoms Scott. For most plants not just paeonies.

All my tree paeonies are from seed, not so expensive like that but a bit 'could be anything' in colour as they have a tendency to cross. I've never had a red seedling from my red delavayi but my neighbour has from seed I gave him. I'm a bit peeved about that.

Most of mine are in some shade, the flowers last a bit longer there.
