i grow all mine in plastic containers. the first time i used the plastic flower buckets you can buy from supermarkets for about a £1 for ten one plant each pot, 2013 i used these plastic containers that had contained food supplements for sheep our neighbour was glad to be rid of them, one plant each pot but this year i will plant two in each pot
oh made holes for drainage, layer of rotted manure, layer of compost, one or two pots cover with compost and then earth up as you would in the ground.
i didnt use new bought compost, some was saved from tubs and baskets last year some home made. i also planted some in August because oh wanted some with Christmas dinner and we ate the last ones yesterday
David Matthews, the garden centre in Newcastle-Emlyn has up to 90 varieties on offer every year. How could you have missed that?
You can buy potatoes of most of the varieties individually, so you can buy, say, six of lots of varieties. And there will be knowledgeable advice on hand.
Thanks for that Newcastle Emlyn potato stock tip, Welshonion! *I'll have to get my 'passport to Ceredigion' organised whilst the wide choice remains! Diolch!
LittleAnn: what were your yields like in 2013? [I generally put two tubers per pot & top-up the compost as it settles over the short growing season]. *I bet those Christmastime 'new' potatoes were a real treat?
i put 1spud to a pot , had some on christmas day as roasters and still have a pot left ps last years were the best . in pots . at my late dads back in the 60s we had quarter of an acre in spuds , happy days
Hi david i didnt count or keep a record i just grow for the pleasure of growing and eating my own stuff, myOH is the one who wanted them for Christmas i think new potatos are for summer although i do like cold ones fried with bacon and eggs
Those looking to buy potatoes earlier in this thread - I came across this site earlier that seems to have a good spread of fairs across the South of the country
This may or not interest you but Lidil are selling first earlies from 30/01/14 in stores in Ireland so suppose the same applys to you lot over there. Homeguard, Queens and Sharpes Express.
At €2.49 for 1.5 kg they are ok value wise me thinks.
