philippa; in my area we all have septic tanks; we get them emptied once a year or so. Apparently the company that empties them then puts the waste on the fields. I have been told that this is permitted; not certain if that is true. image We also sometimes have huge piles of grey 'dust' at the edges of the fields; this apparently is processed sewerage from London.

As long as the veg are well washed, I don't see that there would be a problem. Though personally I think my neighbours might object.image

Isn't that the same as the "night soil" that the old cottagers used to put on the gardens.?

  • I lived in China for many years.  Certainly when I first lived there - 1985/6 - night soil was collected by 'honey wagons' and put on fields.  It is said to be one of the causes of endemic hepatitis in the Chinese population.

If you are only spreading your own septic tank waste on the soil, I suppose that you are only likely to come across your own diseases.  Unless you ever have visitors using your loos.....

I have a septic tank and I'm not keen on experimenting with the contents.
