What fertiliser have you been using on the soil BLT? Also are you planting in the same area each time? (Just wondering about any nasties or diseases that might be causing you to suffer so).

Did you buy garlic cloves to plant from the GC or an online specialist supplier, or have you planted cloves from a supermarket bulb of garlic?

dove is right, most garlic in shops are from varieties designed to growing Italy or southern Spain,

there are varieties that are bred to grow in our conditions in the UK but you can only get them from garden centres and online.

Well thanks guys, in answer to your question, I bought a large bulb of 'Elephant garlic from M&S and planted that. As far as fertilizer goes I'm using 'Miracle Grow granules raked into the bed before planting.. I usually rotate my planting..

I did try an experiment and bought some Banana shallots and tried those but they never grew at all..

Yet my own saved sets of shallots seem ok... I will be changing things around next season.. I will be replacing some tired top soil and digging in some compost too.. I often use Pelleted Poultry manure on my  Allium beds..
