I am planning to lay new turf next spring. In the meantime can someone please tell me what I need to do to prepare the ground (where I am laying the turf) over the winter time.
Can anyone recommend any particular grass type. The soil is heavy clay.

Do you get standing water on this area, or is it very soggy over the autumn and winter months?

No standing water but the area is west facing and partially shaded
Bea, if you search on the RHS website you will find a comprehensive guide to lawn turfing. Good luck and don't skimp on the quality of the turf - there is some rubbish around.
