Sliver Birch question

Hi All

I have noticed over the summer that it looks like my three Silver birch trees might be coming to the end of their lifes.

There are a lot of dead branches on them, although it seems to be sprouting further down the tree?

Anyway, my question is this, can I take cutting from it so if the worst happens at least I'll have offspring's to take its place(s)

Taking cuttings from a dying tree doesn't sound that great to me

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • Lots of the smaller thinner branches do fall off in the wind.  Might be OK.

  • Hi Lizzy,

These are not just small branches, I noticed large amount of the trees not coming into leaf in the spring.  I think after nutcutlet comment I might call in a tree surgeon and see what he says

  • Much better to start afresh. Small whips will be better than cuttings and not at all expensive. Plant a group again, with box balls at the base.

Look around the garden, you might find some seedlings.

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • alternatively plant 3 whips close together to get a "multi stemmed" effect.

  • Birch readily grows from seed and as Nutcutlet has said, look around [in spirng when the leaves are back] as you may already have one or 4.

  • Mark Birch trees are noted for having lots of dead branches, and with our freezing rain storm for the last three days it has pruned off all the dead branches on my birch in fact it has bent down and the top is laying on my lawn, Here's hoping it doesn't snap.
